Checking Vonage Call Continuity Before Choosing an Answering Destination

Check extension prerequisites, excluded destination types, and restoration behavior before relying on a Vonage outage backup number.

Overview

Start with the public number your customers dial. An outage feature configured on one extension does not establish coverage for every route through your phone system. Have your administrator trace that number before treating an answering-service destination as a continuity plan.

Identify the destination type behind the public number

Vonage’s Call Continuity article describes extension-level connectivity-loss detection. It explicitly excludes Virtual Receptionists, Call Groups, and Call Queues. Identify whether the advertised number reaches an extension directly or one of those features; a successful call to an employee’s direct number does not validate the main customer number.

Ask the administrator to document each number being covered, its normal destination type, and the proposed outage route. If the public number reaches an excluded feature, request a supported plan for that route rather than assuming the extension setting protects it.

Confirm the extension and backup prerequisites

Vonage requires a Direct Dial Number on the extension before Call Continuity is configured and describes a backup number in the US or Canada. Ask the administrator to confirm those prerequisites for the actual extension and destination.

Before using an answering provider as the backup, confirm that the destination is approved for your account and that the receiving team has the outage greeting, permitted actions, and contact instructions. A phone number saved in a setting does not establish that the receiving service is ready to handle your callers.

Test the failure condition you intend to cover

Use an administrator-approved test plan in a non-production configuration where possible. Do not disconnect an operating office line merely to try this checklist. A normal forwarding or unanswered-call test should not be recorded as evidence of connectivity-loss behavior.

  • Record the public number and the specific connectivity-loss condition being tested.
  • Verify a new inbound call reaches the intended backup and the answering team receives the necessary instructions.
  • Check the agreed next step if the backup cannot answer or cannot reach your designated contact.
  • Record unresolved requests with an owner instead of treating successful routing as completed customer service.

Verify normal routing after connectivity returns

Vonage describes normal routing resuming automatically after power or internet connectivity returns. Include a new inbound call after restoration in the approved test and verify its actual destination.

Review messages received during the interruption and assign any remaining follow-up. Keep the observed result limited to the configuration and failure condition tested; it does not demonstrate protection from every carrier outage or preservation of conversations already underway.
